Following a month-long wait after the IEM Cologne Major wrapped up, Valve has delivered a major shake-up to the sticker marketplace. Unlike previous tournaments where capsule sales dominated post-event updates, Cologne's direct-purchase model prompted the developer to explore fresh territory.
The star of this update is the brand-new Ranked Series sticker collection. These variants exist for every foil, holo, and gold option from the Major, but they sport a square format instead of the traditional circular design. The most notable addition is a unique number stamped in the bottom right corner of each sticker, displaying the team's final placement at the tournament.
Since multiple squads exited at identical stages like the quarterfinals, Valve employed Buchholz scores from Swiss rounds as the deciding factor. Teams eliminated during Stage 1 at 2-3, such as Liquid and NRG, were ranked using their respective Buchholz tallies, with Liquid securing the superior position. Playoff departures relied on Stage 3 Buchholz calculations for ranking purposes.
Pricing represents the most dramatic shift between Ranked Series and standard stickers. Valve abandoned the fluctuating demand-driven model in favor of fixed, reduced rates tied to Event Series baselines. The savings are substantial—while many Event Series stickers soared past $100 with some breaching $1,000, the priciest Ranked Series options barely crack $50, and the vast majority sit under $20.
Community reaction suggests this pricing strategy addresses frustrations with the earlier system's occasionally extreme costs. The post-capsule sticker rollout has faced challenges throughout this Major cycle, leaving fans curious whether Valve will refine the approach before PGL Singapore arrives.
