The company had consistently delivered these rankings on the opening Monday of each month, but this cycle's target date fell on Labor Day, a federal holiday in the United States.
The postponement triggered problems for tournament organizers who had structured their invitation timelines and seeding schedules around a September 7 release. Under strict interpretation of Tournament Operation Requirements, affected organizers would have been forced to rely on outdated August rankings for their events.
According to TOR guidelines, operators must utilize the most current VRS version as of their designated invite date, and must specify which VRS publication will govern seeding decisions.
Valve attempted to resolve the situation by backdating the ranking release to September 7, but this solution introduced a new complication. The published data apparently reflects September 8 information, which includes ESL Challenger Season 52 Europe Cup 6—a tournament that hadn't concluded by September 7.
This timing discrepancy has resulted in notable ranking variations compared to what a true September 7 snapshot would have shown. Industry analyst Jesper Larsen identified these differences on social media.
Valve later corrected the September VRS ranking by removing events that were incomplete at the designated time. HLTV contacted Valve seeking clarification on whether further adjustments would be implemented.
