Chad "SPUNJ" Burchill, prominent Counter-Strike commentator and analyst, has made concerning claims about BLAST's financial operations during a recent HLTV Confirmed podcast episode. According to SPUNJ, the Danish tournament organizer is experiencing significant delays in processing payments.
The payment issues come amid BLAST's ongoing staff layoffs, which were initiated due to the company's challenging financial position. SPUNJ stated that individuals within his professional circle reported not receiving payments for periods that are becoming worryingly long.
The analyst expressed concern about BLAST's future trajectory, suggesting that competition from PGL and struggles to secure top-tier teams could rapidly deteriorate their position. He noted that if BLAST continues losing marquee names and fails to deliver strong viewership numbers, sponsors may lose interest, creating a potentially dire situation.
BLAST's standing in the competitive Counter-Strike ecosystem appears increasingly fragile. PGL recently announced invitations for their Bucharest tournament scheduled for early 2027. Notably, every top team from the October VRS rankings chose to attend the PGL event instead of BLAST Bounty Winter, despite the tournaments running simultaneously.
Several factors may explain BLAST's inability to attract premier teams. Their events feature smaller prize pools compared to competitors and lack arena venues for playoff matches. Additionally, BLAST requires more extensive time commitments from players for content creation and media obligations, which many professional players find burdensome.
These developments signal potential trouble for an organization that has been a cornerstone of tier-one Counter-Strike tournaments for years.
