G2 Esports are preparing for their playoff run at the Esports World Cup in Paris, marking their first major campaign since bringing Artem "r1nkle" Moroz into the roster. Coach Eetu "sAw" Saha shared his thoughts on the roster change and what the team expects moving forward.
According to sAw, the decision to replace Álvaro "SunPayus" García came down to needing a different playstyle. The team identified that they had multiple passive players and required someone who could take more aggressive positions and create space. While acknowledging SunPayus as a solid player, the coach explained that r1nkle brings a different dimension with his aggressive AWP style and ability to make opening picks.
The Finnish coach believes r1nkle can develop into a more versatile player than his predecessor. He highlighted the young AWPer's strong mechanics across different weapons, including rifles and pistols. However, sAw admits there will be growing pains as both the player and team adapt to each other.
"It's going to be a question about experience," sAw stated. "Some of these overpeeks and small situations that we need to iron out will come with experience. I think if he can learn that and get into our system, it's going to be really good for us."
The coach addressed concerns about r1nkle's inconsistency during his time with NIP, suggesting that a clearer role within G2's system will help him flourish. Rather than demanding extensive communication or strategic input, the team wants r1nkle to focus on his individual performance and bringing that extra winning factor in crucial situations.
G2 showed mixed results in their group stage matches, taking close series against M80 and BIG before securing their playoff spot. sAw views these performances as expected for a team still integrating a new member, emphasizing the need for continuous growth throughout the tournament.
