Danish organization Sashi sparked widespread controversy this week following their announcement of roster changes designed to shift their competitive region from Europe to Asia.
The team revealed on Monday that they've added two Australian players - Tynan "TjP" Purtell and Jordan "Hatz" Bajic - to their lineup. This strategic move allows Sashi to compete in the Asian region, citing that Anton "Anlelele" Huynh holds Vietnamese citizenship as justification for the regional switch.
The changes come with high stakes timing, positioned just before the November 2 deadline for Singapore Major invitations. Sashi stated that Mikkel "MistR" Thomsen and Casper "Cabbi" Jensen would be "stepping out of the starting lineup for the coming month," suggesting the arrangement is temporary. However, both benched players expressed uncertainty about their future on social media.
The decision has ignited fierce debate within the competitive scene. Prominent figures, including Falcons star Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, have publicly called on Valve to intervene and establish clearer rules to prevent teams from exploiting regional transfer systems.
While regional swaps aren't unprecedented - G2 and Liquid executed a similar player exchange earlier this year before the Cologne Major, and BC.Game recently moved to Asia after signing Tyson "asap" Paterson - the temporary nature of Sashi's move has intensified criticism.
According to analyst Finn "Mischief" Farrer's projections, the maneuver may prove futile regardless, with Sashi's qualification chances estimated at only 13 percent based on their tournament schedule. Rival teams haven't hesitated to mock the controversial decision publicly.
