João "koala" Pfeffer, currently ranked 15th in HLTV Prospects and the highest-rated Brazilian player in the ranking, has carved an unconventional path to professional Counter-Strike. Unlike many pros, the 21-year-old didn't grow up in a major city with robust esports infrastructure, nor was he introduced to the game by family members.
Hailing from Tucuruí, a municipality of roughly 115,000 residents in Brazil's northern Pará state, koala's first gaming memories trace back to internet cafes. Too young to play himself, he would spend entire days watching others compete. His persistence eventually wore down his mother's resistance, culminating in a computer as a seventh birthday gift after an emotional plea.
Initially restricted to offline play, koala spent countless hours battling bots on cs_assault, the only map he knew. Years later, a chance encounter with CS:GO at a theme park reignited his passion. After just two matches, he recognized the game's unique appeal and committed to purchasing it.
His nickname emerged from humble circumstances—unable to download images, he selected a koala from Windows stock photos. More challenging was his region's internet infrastructure. With ping exceeding 200 during daytime hours, he adapted by playing exclusively at night when connection quality improved. For three years, koala maintained a grueling schedule, waking at midnight to play six or seven hours on weekends, accumulating 100-200 monthly PUGs and climbing to GamersClub's maximum level 20.
At 14, after watching Luminosity's MLG Columbus Major victory, koala committed to professional Counter-Strike. A fortuitous relocation to Minas Gerais, ostensibly for better schooling, positioned him closer to São Paulo servers—though his mother quickly realized his true motivation.
Koala's professional journey began with Ceará in 2021, followed by brief stints with Elevate and FURIA Academy. Despite posting a modest 0.91 rating with FURINHA, the experience proved invaluable, including three European WePlay Academy League appearances and a third-place finish.
Specializing as an Anchor/Lurker, koala studies top players like ropz and Jimpphat, analyzing meta strategies rather than seeking specific role models. With Sharks (now DENDELE), he's secured five Brazilian LAN victories and multiple international top-four finishes, earning Dust2 Brasil's MVP honors at CBCS Masters Xeque Mate 2025.
His 2026 Major debut at IEM Cologne marked another milestone, though koala views qualification as merely a stepping stone. With Brazil's recent breakthrough at IEM Chengdu, he's setting sights on Tier-S tournament victories and, ultimately, Major championships within the next seven to eight years.
