Falcons have secured their place in the Esports World Cup playoffs following a two-map triumph against Astralis. The Cologne Major champions dominated Ancient with a 13-7 scoreline before edging out a chaotic Dust2 encounter 13-11.
Nikola "NiKo" Kovač was the standout performer, leading his squad to victory against his former G2 in-game leader. On Ancient, Falcons exploded out of the gates with NiKo spearheading a 6-1 advantage. Astralis fought back to level the score by halftime, with Gytis "ryu" Glušauskas controlling Middle and Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard winning duels against his ex-HEROIC teammate René "TeSeS" Madsen. However, Falcons claimed the second pistol round and cruised to victory, dropping only one round in the second half.
Dust2 proved far messier for both squads. Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov threw the match into disarray in round two with a force-buy double Scout kill. The map descended into controlled chaos, featuring Victor "Staehr" Staehr's individual brilliance, successful eco rounds from both teams, and even Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen taking a bullet for TeSeS.
After winning their third pistol round of the series, Falcons reached 12-6 match point following a TeSeS 1v2 clutch. NiKo later acknowledged his team attempted to close prematurely, and a blown 5v3 sparked an Astralis comeback that extended the map to round 24. Ultimately, doubles from NiKo and m0NESY sealed the 13-11 victory.
Falcons now have a week to prepare for their Round of 16 playoff match beginning August 19. Astralis will attempt to reach the bracket stage through the lower bracket on Sunday against either BetBoom or Ninjas in Pyjamas.
