Falcons have clinched the fourth playoff berth for BLAST Open in Porto following a decisive 2-1 victory over Legacy.
The triumph carries extra weight given Falcons' recent struggles against the Brazilian roster. They had dropped both prior encounters - the CAC grand final showdown and last week's Esports World Cup clash. With Vitality lurking in the lower bracket awaiting the vanquished side, the stakes couldn't have been higher.
This result also silences doubts sparked by Falcons' sluggish showing against Lynn Vision the previous day. The Major champions have now guaranteed themselves at least a top-six placement.
While the dual 13-6 scorelines suggest a comfortable outing for Falcons, both maps remained fiercely contested early on. However, pivotal moments swung decisively in their favor as the matches progressed. Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov delivered a crushing 1v3 clutch on Dust2 that snuffed out Legacy's resistance.
"I just took an aggressive duel against him," m0NESY explained to Alex "Mauisnake" Ellenberg afterward. "I didn't want to respect."
Falcons benefited from an uncharacteristic slump by Legacy's star AWPer Santino "try" Rigal, whose stellar performances had fueled their recent hot streak.
Trailing 4-1 on Dust2 after blowing a 5v3 advantage, coach Danny "zonic" Sørensen called timeout and instructed his squad to "reset". They executed brilliantly. m0NESY continued his stellar play while Maksim "kyousuke" Lukin bounced back spectacularly from a dismal 6-20 K-D on map two to post a 2.03 rating on the decider. Legacy managed just two more rounds.
Despite squandering advantageous positions - including a 5v2 on the opener - Falcons weathered every storm to punch their playoff ticket.
