Jason Lake, former owner and CEO of Complexity, has announced the organization's closure following a decision to wind down operations at the end of 2025. After evaluating the business landscape and capital-raising prospects to settle a seller-held note, Lake determined an orderly shutdown was the most professional path forward.
For the first time in 23 years, Lake and his core team are no longer part of Complexity. The organization left an indelible mark on Counter-Strike history, fielding rosters since 2004 and maintaining a presence for 22 of the past 23 years. Notable achievements include victories at ESWC 2005, CPL Summer 2006, and ESL Challenger Jonkoping 2024, along with 10 Major appearances with top placements at DreamHack Winter 2013, EMS One Katowice 2014, and FACEIT Major 2018.
The organization's ownership changed hands multiple times, with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and John Goff acquiring majority stake in 2017, followed by GameSquare's purchase in 2021. Lake's investor group reacquired the brand in 2024, but challenging economic conditions forced the CS team's exit in August 2025. Ownership of the Complexity intellectual property has now reverted to GameSquare due to the seller-held note from the 2024 transaction.
Despite this chapter closing, Lake confirmed he's not retiring. After a needed sabbatical spent with family, he's exploring opportunities to build something new, preferably within esports, where he can contribute meaningfully once again.
