Complexity shuts down operations after more than two decades in esports

Jason Lake has revealed through a video statement on X that Complexity Gaming has officially shut down after 23 years of competitive esports operations. The organization, founded in 2003, has permanently ceased all activities following months of financial struggles.

The shutdown comes several months after Complexity withdrew from the Counter-Strike 2 competitive scene in August 2025. Lake previously cited the immense financial burden of maintaining a top-tier CS2 roster as the primary reason for that exit. Following the CS2 departure, the organization operated in a limited capacity, participating in the NA Revival Series and fielding a Halo Infinite squad during the second half of 2025.

In his announcement, Lake explained his decision to wind down Complexity in what he described as a graceful manner rather than letting it crash spectacularly. He opened up about the harsh economic realities that prevented him from fully acquiring Complexity from its previous owner, GameSquare. The inability to secure sufficient funding for both the buyout and competitive operations ultimately sealed the organization's fate.

With Lake's team unable to complete the acquisition, ownership has reverted to GameSquare, the American holding company that also controls FaZe Clan. Given FaZe's active presence in Counter-Strike 2, a Complexity return to the game appears unlikely due to potential conflicts between the two GameSquare-owned brands.

Lake expressed gratitude to the numerous staff members, players, and supporters who stood by Complexity throughout its existence. The organization's Counter-Strike legacy spans from CS 1.6 in 2003 through every iteration of the game, with only a brief pause after the Championship Gaming Series ended in 2008.

Complexity's roster history includes iconic names such as Daniel "fRoD" Montaner, Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo, Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert, Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz, William "RUSH" Wierzba, and Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski. While championship titles sometimes proved elusive, the organization's impact on North American esports remains undeniable.

Despite Complexity's closure, Lake confirmed this isn't his final chapter in esports. After taking a sabbatical this year, he feels reinvigorated and ready to explore new ventures within the industry, bringing over two decades of valuable experience to whatever comes next.
