Dan "apEX" Madesclaire has reflected on his resurgent individual form that helped propel Vitality into the playoffs at BLAST Open Porto, despite the team competing with jL standing in for William "mezii" Merriman.
Vitality's journey through the tournament was challenging, starting with an unexpected defeat to Inner Circle. However, the French organization rallied through the lower bracket, securing victories against 9z, Legacy, and FUT to clinch their playoff spot.
The captain's performance proved instrumental in this recovery, posting a 1.07 rating across the event with particularly strong showings in their final two matches. Speaking after their qualification, apEX expressed satisfaction with the team's progression throughout the tournament.
Regarding the stand-in situation, apEX acknowledged the differences between jL and mezii. The team loses mezii's calm presence and elite support play, though jL has performed admirably in the role. The captain admitted having limited experience working with stand-ins compared to veterans like karrigan.
ApEX revealed he's been investing significant practice time, which didn't materialize at EWC but has now started showing results. He specifically highlighted strong performances on the third map against 9z and two solid maps versus FUT.
The French veteran acknowledged that younger opponents may have superior mechanical skill, but emphasized that when he elevates his game as an entry fragger and rotation player, Vitality becomes significantly more threatening. His confidence has grown with these recent displays, giving him freedom to make impactful plays.
Despite the stand-in situation, apEX maintained high expectations, noting Vitality's remarkable record of reaching playoffs in nearly every event since Katowice 2024. The team also gained approximately 150 VRS points from their three victories, helping recover their ranking position.
