Falcons kicked off their Thunderpick World Championship campaign in Malta with a convincing 2-0 sweep over Ninjas in Pyjamas, but coach Danny 'zonic' Sørensen isn't getting ahead of himself. Speaking to HLTV after the victory, the Danish tactician emphasized that his team's focus remains firmly on their process rather than immediate trophy expectations.
The win comes after a difficult Fall season for Falcons, who entered the tournament as heavy favorites. Zonic acknowledged the team needs to address fundamental issues, particularly their CT sides, map pool stability, and performance against elite opposition.
Addressing recent criticism of Finn 'karrigan' Andersen's individual statistics, zonic was adamant about the veteran leader's value. The coach stated that karrigan was never recruited for firepower, but for leadership qualities that elevate his teammates. He specifically pointed out that karrigan brings an extra five to ten percent performance boost to players like Maxim 'kyousuke' Blomdin when the team is firing on all cylinders.
Zonic revealed that stress and nerves have plagued the squad during big matches this season. The team has brought in external help to analyze communications and identify differences in their approach. He described their struggles as a mixture of fear and pressure when facing top-tier competition.
Reflecting on their Major win in Cologne, zonic admitted the title created unrealistic expectations. Both the team and community overestimated their development level, leading to frustration when results didn't match those lofty standards. This mental setback has contributed to their inability to defeat top-five teams like MOUZ, Spirit, and Vitality.
Regarding the map pool, zonic expressed less confidence than before their Porto appearance. While the team continues experimenting with maps like Ancient and Anubis to avoid repetitive selections, finding consistency remains challenging. The coach emphasized the importance of understanding their full map repertoire heading into future Majors.
Despite acknowledging the team needs a trophy after extensive hard work, zonic maintained his one-game-at-a-time philosophy. His primary concern remains micro-level improvements and confirming they're progressing in the right direction, rather than fixating on tournament outcomes.
