IEM Cologne 2027 to Feature Eight-Team Playoffs and Revolutionary 360° Stage

October 1, 20261 min read

ESL has unveiled exciting changes for IEM Cologne 2027, scheduled to run from August 4-15, featuring a significantly expanded playoff format and groundbreaking stage configuration.

The tournament organizer announced that the playoffs will now accommodate eight teams competing over four days at the LANXESS arena. Most notably, the event will debut a 360-degree stage setup, marking a historic first for IEM Cologne.

The competition structure begins with Stage 1, where 16 teams will battle through a double-elimination bracket to secure eight advancement spots. These qualifiers will then progress to Stage 2, joining the eight highest-ranked teams in the world. The 16 combined teams will be split into two double-elimination groups, with the top four from each group earning playoff berths.

Match format will consist of best-of-three series throughout the tournament, with one exception: the grand final will be decided in a best-of-five showdown. Additionally, a third-place match will take place before the championship decider.

Fans eager to attend the German showpiece can mark their calendars for October 15, when the initial ticket allocation becomes available for purchase.
