Danish esports organization Astralis has announced a strategic shift in their coaching recruitment approach for their CS2 roster. CEO Jonas Gundersen revealed in an interview with Pley.gg that the team will now prioritize international candidates over local talent.
Gundersen explained the reasoning behind this decision, pointing to potential complacency within the homogeneous Danish culture. The organization believes they occasionally became victims of their own success, allowing themselves to relax when they should have maintained intensity.
The new direction focuses on building a more internationally-oriented, results-driven culture while preserving their Scandinavian roots and Danish identity. This represents a significant departure from their historical approach of maintaining an all-Danish coaching staff.
However, Gundersen clarified that Danish candidates won't be entirely overlooked. If two equally qualified candidates emerge—one Danish and one foreign—the Danish player would receive preference as part of honoring the organization's heritage and DNA.
The CEO emphasized that player evaluation will prioritize skill level, attitude, work ethic, team fit, and individual abilities first. Cultural considerations come only after these fundamental qualities are assessed.
This announcement follows Astralis' June 15th separation from Kasper "ruggah" Due, who served as coach since 2024. Prior to him, all coaching positions were filled by Danish nationals. The timing aligns with the team's roster becoming international in January 2026.
